Human Years Conversion
Convert an age in years between human and animal age scales. Enter the age, choose its current Age type, then select the species under Convert in age.
Convert Human and Animal Ages
Human Years Conversion Formula
Where:
- \(A_{\text{input}}\) — the age entered, in years.
- \(A_{\text{target}}\) — the converted age, in years.
- \(f_{\text{source}}\) — the factor assigned to the selected Age type.
- \(f_{\text{target}}\) — the factor assigned to the selected Convert in age option.
The calculator multiplies the entered age by the source factor and divides by the target factor. It displays the result rounded to two decimal places.
Human Years Conversion – Calculation Example
Example: the default settings convert 16 Human years to the Hippo age scale. Human has a factor of 1, and Hippo has a factor of 1.78.
\[A_{\text{Hippo}}=\frac{16\times1}{1.78}\approx8.99\text{ years}\]
Result: 8.99 years on the Hippo scale.
How to use the calculator
- Enter a nonnegative number in Age in years. Use the age of the person or animal you are starting with, not the age you hope to calculate.
- Under Age type, select the species that the entered age belongs to. Choose Human if you entered a person's age.
- Under Convert in age, select the species whose age scale you want to see. Choose Human here if you want to convert an animal's age to the calculator's human scale.
- Read the result labeled Age in years. Its units are years on the selected target scale, not necessarily the actual age of a particular animal.
For example, to convert a 4-year-old cat, enter 4, set Age type to Cat, and set Convert in age to Human. To reverse the direction, swap those two selections. Selecting the same species in both fields leaves the entered age unchanged.
What does an age conversion mean?
This calculator compares ages using a fixed factor for each species. Human has a factor of 1; other factors include 3.2 for Cat, 3.64 for Dog, and 2 for Horse. Converting an animal age to Human multiplies its age by that animal's factor. Converting from Human to an animal divides the human age by the animal's factor. For a conversion between two animals, the calculator uses both factors in the formula above.
The result is a numerical comparison between the calculator's age scales. For instance, its factors convert a 4-year-old cat to \(4\times3.2=12.8\) Human years. That does not mean every 4-year-old cat has the health, development, or remaining lifespan of a 12.8-year-old person. It only states the result of this calculator's fixed-factor method.
You can use the conversion to make a quick comparison or explore how changing the source and target species changes the number. If you need someone's exact chronological age from a birth date, use the Age Calculator instead. To find the elapsed time between two known dates before entering an age, use Days Between Dates.
Assumptions and limitations
The conversion is linear: doubling the entered age always doubles the result. Real animals do not develop or age at a constant rate relative to humans. Young animals often mature rapidly, while later changes may follow a different pattern. This formula does not account for life stage, breed, body size, sex, living conditions, or health history. In particular, it is not a veterinary assessment of an individual animal.
The factors are the fixed values built into this calculator, not universal scientific standards. Different sources may use different rules, especially for dogs and cats. A familiar claim such as “one animal year equals a set number of human years” should therefore not be treated as a precise biological conversion. Use this result as an approximate comparison, not to decide when an animal needs an examination, a change in diet, or age-specific treatment.
The answer is rounded to two decimal places. A result such as 8.99 years expresses the calculation's precision, not the precision with which biological age can be known. If you are estimating an animal's actual age, uncertainty in its birth date can matter more than the displayed decimals. When comparing results, keep track of which species was selected in each field: reversing the selections reverses the conversion rather than repeating it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert an age between two animal species by hand?
Multiply the age by the first animal’s factor, then divide by the second animal’s factor. For example, a 2-year-old rabbit converted to the Horse scale is \(2\times8.89\div2=8.89\) years. The answer is a comparison on the Horse scale, not an estimate of how long that rabbit will live.
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The “seven human years” rule is an oversimplification, and this calculator uses a different fixed factor: 3.64 for dogs. Neither rule describes every dog’s development. Puppies mature quickly, and aging later in life varies with breed and size, so ask a veterinarian about an individual dog’s life stage or care needs.
Can I enter an age in months instead of years?
Convert months to years before entering the age: divide the number of months by 12. A 6-month-old animal is \(6\div12=0.5\) years old. You can also multiply a result in years by 12 to express it in months, but that changes only the unit—not the accuracy of the age-scale comparison.
What is a normal or good human-equivalent age for a pet?
There is no universal good value. The converted number is not a health score, and pets of the same chronological age can have very different needs. For decisions about diet, exercise, screening, or treatment, consider the animal’s species, breed, size, and medical history with a veterinarian rather than relying on a converted age.
Why do two different animals sometimes give the same converted age?
Some species share a factor in this calculator. For example, Cat and Monkey both use 3.2, so the same entered age produces the same result when either is converted to Human. This reflects how the calculator groups its scales; it does not mean those animals mature at the same rate or have the same lifespan.
Why might converting a rounded result back not give my original age?
The displayed answer is rounded to two decimal places, so some information can be lost. If you use that rounded number as a new input and reverse the selections, the answer may differ slightly from your starting age. This is a rounding effect, not a change in the underlying conversion factors.

What about vampire years?
Hi; you have very good calculators.
I use some of them I bought on codecanyon recently.
However, I need this one and a few from the "Date" category. And I was wondering if it was possible that you offer a wordpres plugin version of your "Date" calculator.
Thanks a lot! Great job.
