Dialysis Dose (Kt/V) Calculator

This calculator helps estimate the dialysis dose using the Kt/V formula, a key metric in assessing dialysis adequacy. It is useful for nephrologists, clinicians, and patients undergoing hemodialysis. Simply enter post/pre BUN levels, ultrafiltration volume, and patient weight to get the Kt/V value.

Kt/V Formula for Hemodialysis

Formula
$$Kt/V = -\log(R – 0.03) + \left(4 – 3.5 \cdot R\right) \cdot \left(\frac{UF}{W}\right)$$

Where:

  • $$R = \frac{\text{PostBUN}}{\text{PreBUN}}$$
  • $$UF$$ = Ultrafiltration volume (liters)
  • $$W$$ = Post-dialysis weight (kg)

Kt/V is a dimensionless number that quantifies the efficacy of a dialysis session. It compares the clearance of urea to the patient’s volume of distribution. The formula takes into account the ratio of post- to pre-dialysis blood urea nitrogen (BUN), adjusted for ultrafiltration and body weight. A typical target Kt/V is β‰₯1.2 for thrice-weekly dialysis. This tool aids clinicians in optimizing treatment plans and ensuring adequate dialysis delivery.
