Dextrose Intravenous Target Concentration Calculator

This calculator determines the final target concentration of dextrose when mixing two IV solutions with different dextrose concentrations. It is useful for healthcare professionals when adjusting intravenous dextrose levels for patient-specific needs. Simply input the volume and concentration of each solution to compute the resulting mixture’s dextrose percentage.

Dextrose Concentration Formula

Formula
$$\text{Target Dextrose \%} = \frac{(V_1 \times C_1) + (V_2 \times C_2)}{V_1 + V_2}$$

Where:

  • $$V_1, C_1$$: volume and concentration of the first solution
  • $$V_2, C_2$$: volume and concentration of the base solution
  • The result gives the final concentration of dextrose in the mixed solution

This formula is commonly used in hospital settings where intravenous (IV) dextrose solutions need to be customized to a specific concentration for a patient. For example, mixing a 50 mL D50 solution with 100 mL D5 solution results in a final concentration that can be precisely calculated. This tool helps prevent errors and ensures appropriate glucose administration.
