Vertical Curve Elevation Point Calculator

This calculator determines the elevation at any point along a vertical parabolic curve. By entering the elevation of the PVC, the initial and final grades, the distance xx from the PVC, and the curve length, you can precisely compute the elevation at that location. Ideal for roadway and railway design.

Vertical Curve Elevation Formula

Formula
$$y = EPVC + g_1 \cdot x + \frac{(g_2 – g_1) \cdot x^2}{2L}$$

Where:

  • $$y$$ — elevation at point xx
  • $$EPVC$$ — elevation at Point of Vertical Curve (start of curve)
  • $$g1$$ — initial grade (decimal, e.g. 0.02 for 2%)
  • $$g2$$ — final grade
  • $$x$$ — distance from PVC (horizontal)
  • $$L$$ — length of the vertical curve

This equation is widely used in highway and railway engineering to design smooth vertical transitions between different grades. It ensures comfort, safety, and structural performance by providing precise elevations along the vertical alignment of the curve.
